Recipient Org: Description We provide canal boat holidays and day trips for people with disabilities, their families, friends and other disability charities and community groups. We operate three wide beam canal boats which have all been specially adapted with ramps, wheelchair accessible lifts, hoists, wet rooms and day beds to enable everyone to get involved in the boating experience. Whether relaxing and watching the world go by, getting closer to nature, steering the boat or helping with the locks, our clients can get involved in every stage of the trip. Our focus is on ‘Ability, not Disability‘. We offer day trips where our volunteers take groups of up to 12 people out for adventures on the water. We manage the boat and our clients choose whatever participation they want, under supervision by our volunteers, offering a completely different day out for many. We train families or community groups to take out our accessible boats for extended holiday trips. Holidays on the water can provide them with new experiences and a much needed escape from stresses of everyday life. CanalAbility also provides a great volunteering opportunity for local people to get involved, learn new skills, meet and make friends reducing social isolation, and improve health.
