Recipient Org: Description | Braintree District Mencap was formed in 1955 to help people with a learning disability and their families. Braintree Mencap want a world where people with a learning disability and their families are valued, listened to, treated equally and included with the opportunity to make independent choice to fulfil their ambitions with regards to what they want to do and achieve for themselves and their family members. For children with a learning disability aged 5-19 years we offer Ofsted registered activities every Saturday and during the school holidays designed in consultation with the young people themselves. These sessions provide much needed respite for carers to have time for themselves and to spend time with their other children - sometimes referred to as 'young carers'. We also run 'whole family' activities so that parents can spend time with all their children without the needs of the child with a disability getting in the way. We run classes and clubs during the week for adults with a learning disability both within Charles Leeks House and support people to access community resources that most of us take for granted. We work with other organisation to help them to make their services more accessible to people with a learning disability by providing information and support. These activities have an enormous impact upon reducing social isolation and for many people living semi independently within the community or a carer of someone with a learning disability is a regular 'touchpoint' with someone who is interested in their wellbeing. We know that people with a learning disability and their carers struggle to navigate the health, social care and benefits systems; and they struggle to know where to go to for help with this. As a trusted friendly face Braintree Mencap is in an ideal position to help people with these issues |
